When it comes to startups in Greater Washington, artificial intelligence remains a through line. But what stands out is how differently the technology is being applied.

From automating federal compliance work to detecting pediatric health issues or strengthening the power grid, our collection of Startups to Watch in 2026 is showcasing how companies are using AI in ways that deliver impact.

Other startups are focused on building in the physical world — and beyond. The region is now home to its first shared manufacturing facility for beauty founders as well as a company looking to manufacture semiconductors in space to skirt the constraints on Earth.

Many of the founders share similar challenges: scaling lean teams to meet demand, navigating shifting regulatory environments, proving early traction in complex markets and managing the strain that comes with rapid growth.

But they’re also aligned in their momentum, with new funding rounds and product launches on the horizon.

In this year’s list, the Business Journal highlights 10 companies early in their growth journeys already shaping the region’s innovation landscape.

About the Company

McLean-based pWin.ai is building AI tools to streamline the processes government contractors rely on for federal awards. Founded in 2024 by CEO Vishwas Lele and Executive Chairman Sanju Bansal, the startup helps companies reuse their own institutional knowledge to generate in minutes, not weeks, full proposal drafts — often hundreds of pages — in a single, consistent voice centered on practices developed by proposal consulting firm Shipley Associates. The startup raised a $10 million seed round in June and now employs more than 50 people, with plans to grow its workforce by up to 40% as demand increases. It said its technology has already helped customers win federal contracts while drastically reducing time commitments.

Why we’re Watching

The startup is expanding capabilities tied to the reuse of a company’s proven contract-winning content and it’s advancing its security-based service for generating proposals for sensitive defense and national security contracts. PWin.ai is vying to be a key player in how federal contractors meet increased demands without necessarily increasing headcount.
